The Readiness Gap
AI is accelerating execution before judgement, inside your channel partners and programmes.

ACE lens: Analytics (where should we play? Layer 2, activation friction) · Technology (Spades, a caution), Community (Clubs, a notable finding), Value Proposition (Diamonds, planning implications) · In the Execution Engine: diagnose, design, then scale
SmarterX’s 2026 State of AI for Business Report surveys 2,109 professionals and finds execution running ahead of judgement: 53% say they are integrating AI into their work, while 29% of their organisations have decided what it is for, and 13% have the governance in place to scale it. A third of the sample is agencies and consultancies: a potential proxy for the long tail of channel partners and MSPs.
This proxy model has been correlated with a range of other relevant and current research (2026) to develop a wider perspective on AI readiness in the B2B tech ecosystem.
Our advice has always been that technology accelerates execution before it enhances judgement; this is what that looks like in terms of current research and observed behaviour on AI adoption.
The risk is that partner sales and marketing enablement, built on tools, certificates and money, might be accelerating and compounding the challenges for B2B technology vendors and their partner ecosystems.

01
Execution is running ahead of judgement in a third of the general workforce surveyed. 53% of respondents say they are in the Integration or Transformation phase personally; 25% say their organisation has reached Scaling. Of the individuals identifying as ‘Advanced’, 62% work in an organisation that has not attained Scale: a third of the sampled individuals appear to be running ahead of their employers with whatever tools and working practices they choose.
02
Judgement at the company level is binary, and the mid-market is currently going without. 29% of the companies surveyed have an AI roadmap, 39% a council, 48% generative AI policies, 48% an ethics policy. Managed scaling of AI programmes runs at 32% in firms under $1m of revenue, 30% above $1bn, and 14–16% in the $50m–$500m middle.
03
Partner enablement is adding execution pressure to a judgement constraint. Time is cited as a barrier by 30%, budget by 15%; among organisations already scaling, time leads at 42%. The training apparently most wanted is integration into workflows (58%), agents (51%) and no-code assistants (45%); prompting gets 15%. Omdia’s March 2026 poll of 278 partners agrees: partners put workshops first (35%) and MDF fourth (15%) among what they want from vendors.

SmarterX (Marketing AI Institute), 2026 State of AI for Business Report, May 2026; 34-question survey, n = 2,109, fielded February–April 2026, 82% United States. Corroborated against Omdia (n = 278), GTIA UK&I (n = 130), AvePoint/Omdia (n = 333), Microsoft WTI (n = 20,000) and Grant Thornton (n = 950), all 2026, and Analysys Mason/Giacom UK SMB spend data. Read against Stacking the Deck chapters 1 and 8. No financial data; fieldwork is 2026.
Bottom line
Partner teams and people are adopting AI faster than their organisations can decide what it is for and how to manage its scaling up. Judgement, in the form of roadmap, council and policies, comes as a package or not at all, and the mid-tier partner most vendor programmes are built around is the least likely to have it. Enablement is adding execution pressure to a significant judgement constraint in partner ecosystems, so diagnose and design before you scale, both in the partners and in your programme.
